LUBBOCK, Texas - After going down 1-0 by losing the doubles point, the No. 32 Texas Tech men's tennis team came back to upset No. 25 Arizona, 4-3, at the McLeod Tennis Center Friday afternoon.
Arizona (6-2) began the match by winning the doubles point in a tiebreaker at No. 2. The Wildcats got their first win at No. 1 as Boja Malo and Pat Metham beat Tech's Raony Carvalho and Rafael Garcia, 9-7. Carvalho and Garcia were up 7-3 before losing six-straight games. Tech (8-1) then got the win at No. 3 as Vitor Manzini and Raphael Pfister defeated Andres Carrasco and Andres Arango, 9-7. The doubles point came down to the No. 2 spot, which went into a tiebreaker as Arizona's Ravid Hazi and Geoff Embry were victorious over the Red Raiders' 16th-ranked duo of Gonzalo Escobar and Andre Stabile, 9-8 (5).
In singles action, Tech opened play by winning five of the first six sets. Forty-first ranked Escobar got the Red Raiders on the scoreboard with a 6-2, 6-1, win over Jason Zafiros at No. 2. Carvalho, who is ranked 63rd, then gave Tech a 2-1 lead as he downed Jay Goldman, 7-5, 6-1, at No. 1. Arizona knotted the score at 2-2 with a victory at No. 5 as Embry beat Manzini, 6-3, 7-6 (4). The Red Raiders went on to win at No. 4 as Stabile defeated Carrasco, 6-2, 1-6, 6-4. With the Red Raiders up 3-2, they needed to win one of the last two remaining matches to clinch the contest and Garcia did just that by claiming a three-set win, 6-0, 4-6, 6-1, against Arango at No. 3. The last player on the court was Pfister, who lost a third-set tiebreaker to Metham, 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7).
"I'm so proud of the way we fought especially after losing the heartbreaker in doubles," said head coach Tim Siegel. "Our singles players showed so much heart and toughness. This was one of the biggest wins at home we have ever had."
Tech returns to action on Sun., Feb. 28, as it hosts No. 49 Denver at 10:30 a.m. If inclement weather occurs, the match will be moved indoors to the Falls Athletic Club beginning at 8:30 a.m. with singles first.
