No. 18 Red Raiders Extend Winning Streak to Nine

LUBBOCK, Texas - The No. 18 Texas Tech men's tennis team has advanced to the championship match of the HEB Tournament of Champions Classic with a 4-0 win over No. 64 Western Michigan on Friday afternoon in Corpus Christi, Texas.
The Red Raiders (11-1) take on No. 23 BYU on Saturday at 12 p.m. at the HEB Tennis Center in the championship match.
In the match against the Broncos (11-5), only singles was played and Tech snatched the first four matches as it won at No. 1, 2, 6 and 5, in that order. Tech opened singles play by winning all six-opening sets. No. 12 Raony Carvalho got the Red Raiders on the scoreboard first with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Kazuya Komada at No. 1. The second victory came from No. 58 Gonzalo Escobar at the No. 2 spot as he downed Michael Calderone, 6-3, 6-2. Raphael Pfister then beat Brad Noel, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6, while Vitor Manzini clinched the match by defeating Casey Cullen, 6-4, 7-6 (5), at No. 5.
"It was a good day for us," said head coach Tim Siegel. "We played well in spots this morning and then played well as a team against a well coached and scrappy Western Michigan team. Gonzalo Escobar was very good today."
