LUBBOCK, Texas - The No. 16 Texas Tech men's tennis team got a 6-1 win over No. 54 Oklahoma State, but had to battle to the very end as three matches went into the third set tonight at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla.
For the 16th time this season, Tech (19-3/2-2 Big 12) won the doubles point as it was victorious in two of three matches against Oklahoma State (8-11/0-5 Big 12). Tech's No. 2 tandem and 59th-ranked Gonzalo Escobar and Andre Stabile picked up the first win as they defeated Eric West and Anton Bobytskyi, 8-5. Securing the doubles point was the No. 3 team of Vitor Manzini and David Gonzalez, beating Maxi Kuhn and Ilija Martinsoki, 8-6.
In singles action, the Red Raiders came out strong winning five of the six opening sets, but then lost the second set in three matches - No. 3, 4 and 5.
Tech took a 2-0 lead with a win at No. 6 as Raphael Pfister crushed Kuhn, 6-2, 6-2. OSU got its only win in singles at No. 1 as 14th-ranked Oleksandr Nedovyesov beat 15th-ranked Raony Carvalho, 6-4, 6-2. The Red Raiders then won at No. 2 as 59th-ranked Escobar downed 124th-ranked Bobytskyi, 6-2, 7-6 (3).
With the three remaining matches in the third set, the Red Raiders needed to win at least one of those to claim the victory, and they did that and more as they captured all three matches. Rafael Garcia clinched the match for Tech as he defeated Aleksey Bessonov, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1, at No. 3. Then came a win by Manzini at No. 5 as he knocked off West, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (8). Wrapping up the match was Stabile as he beat Martinoski, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (4).
"It was a great team win for us," head coach Tim Siegel stated. "OSU battled until the end as the last three matches went into the third set. I'm very proud of our effort. This was the best match for our team in terms of effort. Rafael Garcia clinched the win for us. He is playing at a high level and I can't say enough about how well he is playing right now."
The Red Raiders face No. 20 Oklahoma on Sun., April 18, at 1 p.m. in Norman at the Headington Family Tennis Center.
