Carvalho and Escobar Named Academic All-Big 12

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Big 12 conference has named 19 student-athletes to the 2010 Academic All-Big 12 Men's Tennis Team, the league office announced. Texas Tech sophomore Raony Carvalho was named to the first team, while sophomore Gonzalo Escobar received second team honors.
Carvalho, who hails from Brazilia, Brazil, holds a 3.58 grade-point average (GPA) as he is majoring in human development and family studies.
The Manta, Ecuador, native Escobar has a 3.03 GPA and is majoring in business.
This is the first Big 12 academic honor for both Carvalho and Escobar.
Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services and media relations offices, the men's tennis academic all-league squad consisted of 12 first team members combined with seven on the second team. First team members have recorded a 3.20 or better GPS, while the second team is those with a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
To quality, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or in the two previous semesters and have participated in 60 percent of her team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participations are also eligible.
