LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech's 37th-ranked Gonzalo Escobar won his opening-round match at the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga., Wednesday evening.
Starting the day off, 17th-ranked Raony Carvalho fell to 30th-ranked Marek Michalicka of Wisconsin, 6-2, 6-3, in the first round. Carvalho finishes the year with a 26-11 record.
Later in the evening, Escobar knocked off 48th-ranked Tripper Carleton of Wake Forest, 6-2, 2-6, 7-5. Escobar faces top seed and second-ranked Henrique Cunha of Duke at 9 a.m. CDT in the second round. The win improves Escobar to 24-7 for the year (fall and spring).
"Ray (Raony Carvalho) had a tough time today," said head coach Tim Siegel. "He didn't have a lot of practice time due to his injury. It was great win for Gonzalo (Escobar), and he has a tough match ahead of him as he plays the top seed tomorrow."
The doubles team of 17th-ranked Carvalho and Rafael Garcia will play 31st-ranked Jason Jung and Evan King of Michigan at 1:30 p.m. CDT.
