LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech women's golf team is remaining active this week with four players competing in the Texas Women's State Amateur Championship, while Beverly Mendoza is playing in the Women's Trans National Amateur Championship.
Incoming freshman Hannah Arnold and sophomore Gabby Dominguez were among the 32 players who advanced to the championship flight following Monday's opening round of the Texas Women's State Amateur Championship held in Austin. Arnold fired an even-par 71, while Dominguez shot a two-over 73 to move into the match play portion of the tournament set to begin today.
Tech's other two players in the tournament, seniors Jackie Smith and Alex Gibson, advanced to the first flight after Smith opened with a seven-over 78 and Gibson shot an 11-over 82.
The Lady Raiders' success on the links stretched all the way to the Women's Trans National Amateur Championship in Lincoln, Neb., where Mendoza finished eight strokes off the lead Monday after a six-over 78 opening round. While Mendoza may one day forget her opening round score, one shot may stick with her forever as she aced her first career hole-in-one.
Mendoza, who finished the opening round tied for 37th overall, will play one additional round today before the top 64 players in the field move to a match play format.
