FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The Texas Tech women's golf team hits the links for the first time this fall when it opens the Ptarmigan Ram Classic on Monday at the Ptarmigan Country Club in Fort Collins, Colo.
The Lady Raiders begin their season against a competitive field of 16 teams, two of which that advanced to the NCAA Championships last year in Oregon and San Jose State and five more who qualified for an NCAA Regional in Baylor, Louisville, California, Idaho, and Colorado State. Fresno State, New Mexico State, UTEP, Colorado, Illinois, Northern Colorado, Long Beach State, and Wyoming make up the rest of the tournament field.
Coming off an NCAA Regional berth of its own, second-year head coach JoJo Robertson returns most of her squad from a year ago, most noticeably sophomores Gabby Dominguez, Kim Kaufman, Beverly Mendoza, and Tech's lone senior, Alex Gibson. Dominguez led the way for the Red Raiders last year with a 74.7 stroke average, while Kaufman, Mendoza, and Gibson were all among the top five in stroke average on the squad.
Fellow sophomore Deborah DeVilla also returns to the lineup, adding to Robertson's first recruiting class of freshmen Hannah Arnold (Lufkin, Texas), Katie Grady (Mansfield, Texas), and Paloma Martinez (Monclova, Mexico).
One noticeable different from the playing roster is the graduation of Rosalyn Kim. An NCAA Championships singles qualifier last season, Kim will remain with the program as a student assistant coach while she finishes her degree in what should be a great mentoring role that adds to the philosophies of Robertson and assistant coach John Cleary.
The Lady Raiders fell a few shorts strokes short of qualifying for the NCAA Championships as a team at the NCAA East Regional last season, finishing in a tie for ninth, one place from advancing.
Tech finished fifth overall at the Ptarmigan Ram Classic a year ago in their first tournament under Robertson. Dominguez paced the squad with a seventh-place finish, while Kaufman and Mendoza finished in a tie for 24th overall.
