Kaufman Fires 5-Under For Opening Round Lead

LUBBOCK, Texas - Kim Kaufman fired a 5-under 67 to take an opening-round lead on Monday of the Ptarmigan Ram Classic at the Ptarmigan Country Club in Fort Collins, Colo.
Kaufman shot 1-under over the first nine holes and sunk five birdies over the back nine with her only bogey of the round not coming until the 17th hole. She holds a two-stroke lead over Rebecca Hellbom (New Mexico), Jaclyn Jansen (Baylor), Louisa Lies (Fresno State), and Emily Talley (Colorado).
The rest of the Tech lineup struggled in their first action of the season as Alex Gibson, Gabriella Dominguez, Hannah Arnold and Paloma Martinez all failed to finish under 5-over on the round.
Despite the struggles, Tech is still in the hunt for a quality finish as the team is tied for 12th with UTEP and San Jose State entering Tuesday's final round at 16-over-par.
Baylor was the only team to finish the first day under par at 6-under, while Colorado (even par), Oregon (2-over), Colorado State (2-over), Louisville (3-over) and New Mexico (3-over) complete the top five.
