LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech rallied to win nine-straight points in the third set but its comeback came a little too late as Kansas State salvaged the final point to defeat the Red Raiders, 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-23), Saturday afternoon at the United Spirit Arena.
Unlike its previous match against Missouri on Wednesday, errors plagued Tech (2-9; 0-2) as the Red Raiders committed 22 in the match. Kansas State (7-5; 2-0), on the other hand, committed only 12 on its way to a .296 attacking percentage in the match.
Following a 25-17 first set, Tech was able to get back in the match in the second frame, leading 15-13 at one point. The Wildcats immediately began a 12-4 run to close the set and force Tech to attempt its first come-from-behind victory of the year.
Tech did not get the start it needed for a comeback, however, trailing 20-9 at one point before eventually beginning its comeback. Down 23-12 at the time, the Red Raiders pulled to a 24-23 deficit thanks to nine-straight points, but Kansas State secured the win off a failed Tech block attempt.
Amanda Dowdy and Miara Cave led the Red Raiders offensively with 12 and 11 kills each. Jackie Vincent came close to matching her career-high for digs, finishing with 18 in the match, one shy of her personal best, while also adding a career-high eight assists.
The Red Raiders return to the road next week to continue Big 12 play, beginning with Oklahoma on Wednesday night and concluding with Texas A&M next Saturday. Tech returns to the United Spirit Arena on Sept. 29 to face Baylor.
