LUBBOCK, TX - The 15th-ranked Texas Tech men's tennis team opened its 2011 dual-match season with a 6-1 victory over the No. 66 UNLV Rebels at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on Friday afternoon.
The Red Raiders grabbed the doubles point with match wins by Gonzalo Escobar and Vitor Manzini over Alex Bull and Rene Ruegamer, 8-6, and Gabriel Wanderley and David Gonzalez over Willie Sublette and Tamas Batyi, 9-7.
Texas Tech won five of the six contested singles matches over the UNLV Rebels. Raony Carvalho, Rafael Garcia, Vitor Manzini, Gabriel Wanderley, and Raphael Pfister earned wins in their first dual match of the 2011 season.
"It was easy to tell that this was our first dual match of the season," said head coach Tim Siegel. "UNLV is a much improved squad and the outcome could have been different for us. We'll have to play much better tomorrow against UC Irvine."
The Red Raiders take on the Anteaters of UC Irvine on Saturday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex. Doubles play gets underway at 4:00 p.m. (CT).
