Red Raiders Defeat Anteaters

LUBBOCK, TX - No. 15 Texas Tech downed No. 55 UC Irvine at the Fertitta Tennis Complex in Las Vegas, Nev. on Saturday afternoon for the second Red Raider dual match win of the weekend.
The UC Irvine Anteaters opened the day by winning all three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. However, the Red Raiders stormed back in singles play to claim five matches and a 5-2 win.
No. 20 Gonzalo Escobar opened singles play with a 7-6 (8-6), 6-2, win over UCI's No. 33 Chris Kearney. Raony Carvalho followed with a win over Steven Henderson, 6-1, 6-2. Red Raider Rafael Garcia downed Sam Gould, 7-6 (4), 6-3. Texas Tech newcomer Gabriel Wanderley defeated Irvine's Fabian Matthews, 6-4, 6-4. Brazil native, Rafael Pfister won his match over Ryan Mayer 6-2, 6-2.
"We played much better today," noted head coach Tim Siegel. "UC Irvine is a very strong team, and I'm proud of how our players competed. Our top three played extremely well. Now, we're all looking forward to the ITA Kick-Off Weekend back at the McLeod Tennis Center next Saturday."
On January 29, Texas Tech, one of only 15 national hosts, welcomes LSU, Auburn, and California to the McLeod Tennis Center for the 2011 ITA Division 1 Kick-Off Weekend. The 15 schools that win both of their matches at these events will be invited to play in the Feb. 18-21 ITA National Team Indoor Championship hosted by the University of Washington.
The Red Raiders open against LSU at 12 p.m. Auburn will play California following the Texas Tech vs. LSU match. On Sunday, the winners meet to determine which team will gain an entry to the National Team Indoor Championship.
