The Texas Tech baseball team's fall season is underway and throughout the remainder of the semester, Texas Tech Athletics Communications will take an inside look into the Tech program with Red Raider Profiles on each player.

Texas Tech went into Big 12 Conference play last season with a lot of hope, with a lot of new faces who were ready to make a run at the post-season. One player the Red Raiders didn't enter conference play with was their top starting pitcher, Daniel Coulombe.
Just before Coulombe was set for Tommy John surgery in mid-March to repair a torn UCL in his left elbow, the transfer from South Mountain Community College was among the leaders in the Big 12 averaging 12.54 strikeouts per nine innings.
Coulombe, who entered his last start after striking out at least eight batters in back-to-back outings, still managed to pitch six innings and strikeout six batters with only one walk against Iowa in his final appearance on March 11.
He finished the season 0-2 with a 3.98 ERA in 20.1 innings pitched (4 starts) with 28 strikeouts and only seven walks allowed. In fact, Coulombe's nine strikeouts against BYU (2/25) marked the most by a Red Raider during the 2011 season.
"It was a really big blow for us last year to lose Daniel because he gave us a chance as our lead starter to keep us in the game against anyone in the country," four-year head coach Dan Spencer said. "He can pitch. He is left handed and he has a tremendous breaking ball. Right now, in his rehab bullpens, he is better than he was a year ago when we thought he was healthy."
In addition, Coulombe joins fellow teammates and left-handed pitchers Rusty Shellhorn and Ben Flora as Red Raiders who were named to the Louisville Slugger High School All-America team in 2008 while a member of the Chaparral High School baseball squad.
