Red Raider Profile: Ryan Bielitz
The Texas Tech baseball team's fall season is underway and throughout the remainder of the semester, Texas Tech Athletics Communications will take an inside look into the Tech program with Red Raider Profiles on each player.
Ryan Bielitz (LHP - 6-2, 215 - L/L - Fr./HS - The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands)
Texas Tech freshman Ryan Bielitz is a unique piece of the Red Raiders pitching puzzle as he is the only left-handed pitcher on the team that is a true freshman.
Tech's experienced staff has a total of three seniors, eight juniors, five sophomores and five freshmen. The Red Raiders return 83 percent of the team's innings pitched from 2011, but that doesn't mean Tech isn't thrilled to get a talented young pitcher like Bielitz.
Bielitz came to Tech after being ranked the No. 79 pitcher in the state of Texas by Perfect Game. The publication also tabbed Bielitz as the No. 65 ranked left-handed pitcher in Texas going into his senior year.
In perhaps his finest high school season, Bielitz went 3-2 with one save and a 1.87 ERA with 23 strikeouts and just five walks allowed during his junior season. Pitching on an elite pitching staff at The Woodlands High School, Bielitz helped lead his high school squad to a co-district championship in 2010 with a 21-7 record.
His high school program has produced several NCAA Division I players and four players that were selected in the Major League Baseball First Year Players Draft the past two seasons. In fact, Bielitz played his junior season with right-handed pitcher Jameson Taillon, who was the No. 2 pick in the first round of the 2010 MLB Draft (Pittsburgh Pirates).
"We are really happy to have Ryan in our program," fourth-year head coach Dan Spencer said. "He is a hard worker. He is a big, strong kid. He brings a lot of skill. He has the ability to throw the change (up) and breaking ball for a strike. He is going to be a very good pitcher here at Texas Tech."
In addition, Bielitz participated in the USA Baseball National Team 17U trials as a member of the team from the state of Texas.
