Red Raider Profile: Bryant Burleson
The Texas Tech baseball team's fall season is underway and throughout the remainder of the semester, Texas Tech Athletics Communications will take an inside look into the Tech program with Red Raider Profiles on each player.
Bryant Burleson (INF - 5-8, 170 - R/R - Fr./HS - Midland, Texas/Midland Christian)
Perhaps the most impressive offensive performer this fall for the Red Raiders has been infielder Bryant Burleson, a true freshman from Midland Christian High School.
Burleson's abilities at the plate won't surprise anyone who has seen him play over the course of his high school career as he finished his prep career batting .567 with 16 doubles, three triples, six home runs, 47 RBI and 20 stolen bases with just 10 strikeouts as a senior in 2011.
His final high school season saw him earn first team all-district, district MVP honors and first team all-state.
Although, Burleson's breakthrough season came much earlier in his days as a high school player.
As a freshman, he batted .382 with 16 RBI in 76 at-bats. He followed up with an impressive sophomore season batting .442 with six homers and 33 RBI, before an unbelievable junior campaign where he hit .626 (57-for-91) with 44 runs, five home runs, 49 RBI and 22 stolen bases with a .802 on-base percentage.
He was a four-time all-district performer and earned all-state recognition twice during his career.
Having a son playing baseball in the Big 12 Conference will be nothing new for the Burleson family as their oldest son, Cory, is a senior catcher at Nebraska.
"Bryant Burleson has done a great job this fall, he has really swung the ball (well)," fourth-year head coach Dan Spencer said. "He is probably our most developed young hitter, as far as ready to hit now at this level. We are very excited about the depth that he brings and with his impact bat. We have to be creative and figure out how to get him at-bats and where to play him."
In addition, Burleson had perhaps his finest high school moment in a district contest during his junior season when he hit for the cycle and then finished the game hitting a walk-off home run.
