The Texas Tech baseball team's fall season is underway and throughout the remainder of the semester, Texas Tech Athletics Communications will take an inside look into the Tech program with Red Raider Profiles on each player.
Bo Altobelli (C/INF - 6-1, 195 - R/R - Jr./2L - Plano, Texas/Plano)
Junior catcher Bo Altobelli had a breakthrough season in 2011 leading the Red Raiders batting .352 (25-for-71) during Big 12 play and also led the team with 15 infield base hits and tied for the team lead with five game-tying RBI.
Altobelli can do just about everything. Not only did he make the Johnny Bench Award Watch List, national award given annually to the country's top catcher, he also hit .333 on the season in 48 games played (36 starts) with seven doubles, one grand slam (first career homer), 24 RBI and stole four bases. In addition, Altobelli struck out only 16 times with 17 walks.
In his first season as a starter for the Red Raiders, Altobelli earned All-Big 12 honorable mention while recording 13 multi-hit games and finished his sophomore season strong with an eight-game hitting streak to finish the season.
Two of Altobelli's finest games in 2011 came in clutch situations for the Red Raiders. He tallied his first career four-hit game going 4-for-6 with a double and three RBI at No. 14 Baylor and then delivered his first career home run - a grand slam - against No. 22 Oklahoma State in the regular-season finale, a Red Raider 5-3 win.
"Bo is having a great fall and obviously he had a great year for us last spring," fourth-year head coach Dan Spencer said. "He is getting better and better defensively, and he is a good leader. He can drive the ball and drive in runs. He can bunt. He can bunt for a hit. He can move runners. He has gotten better every year he has been here."
Altobelli hit the halfway point of the season last year with a .400 batting average (24-of-60) while being named to a pair of All-Tournament teams, including the Brooks Wallace Memorial Classic All-Tournament team and the Red Raider Classic All-Tournament team.
