Red Raider Profile: Zach Reding
The Texas Tech baseball team's fall season ended with the annual Red & Black Series at the of October, but throughout the remainder of the semester Texas Tech Athletics Communications will continue taking an inside look into the Tech program with Red Raider Profiles on each player.
Zach Reding (OF - 6-1, 210 - L/L - Fr./HS - Dallas, Texas/Dallas Jesuit College Prep)
Zach Reding has come a long way. Consider in the spring of 2008, Reding was on the verge of getting cut from his freshman high school program and now he is playing for Texas Tech Red Raiders in the Big 12 Conference.
Reding, who throws and hits left handed, went to try out for his high school team with a left-shoulder injury. His injury was so severe that it forced him to go through his freshman tryout using his non-throwing arm, his right arm.
This process made it difficult for Reding to show the Dallas Jesuit College Prep coaching staff what he was capable of.
He barely made it through the tryouts and earned a spot freshman team. Three years later, Zach Reding made a name for himself at Dallas Jesuit and his high school program benefitted greatly from his contributions.
Reding batted .452 (52-for-115) with 14 doubles, three home runs and 43 RBI with a .532 on-base percentage and .652 slugging percentage with 10 stolen bases as a senior. He led his high school squad to a 30-10 record and was named 9-5A First Team All-District. He was also selected to the North Texas All-Star squad.
"Zach is going to play for us this spring," fourth-year head coach Dan Spencer said. "How much and where he plays remains to be seen. He has made a real claim to be the guy out in right field. We are very excited about Zach."
Texas Tech has had a freshman starter in the outfield in four of the last six years. Recently, David Paiz was the mainstay for the Red Raiders in right field in 2011, Garrett Totten started the majority of the games for Tech in right field in 2009, Taylor Ashby started 30 games in center field in 2007 and Roger Kieschnick started 55 games in left field in 2006. In addition, both Paiz and Kieschnick were named Freshman All-Americans during their first campaigns for the Red Raiders.
