LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech head baseball coach Dan Spencer will be a featured speaker at the 67th Annual American Baseball Coaches Association National Convention in Anaheim, Calif., Jan. 5-8.
Spencer, the fourth-year skipper of the Red Raiders, will present "The Pitcher-Catcher Relationship," on Friday, Jan. 6 from 9-9:40 a.m., where he will discuss the importance of constructing a team's pitching staff while building a relationship with the team's catchers.
Spencer has guided Tech to an increase in wins during each of his three seasons at the helm. Last year the Red Raiders went 33-25, marking the program's most wins in a season since 2005. The Red Raiders also tallied an 11-3 record during midweek games in 2011 and led the Big 12 during the regular season playing 20 games against nationally-ranked opponents.
During his time at Texas Tech, Spencer has mentored 19 Red Raiders who have been selected in the Major League Baseball Draft or who have signed free agent contracts. In 2011, four Red Raiders were drafted and one signed a free agent contract.
Spencer, who came to Texas Tech after spending 11 seasons as the assistant (1997-2003) and associate head coach (2004-2007) at Oregon State, has coached a total of 64 MLB Draft picks while coaching 45 draft picks during his time in Corvallis. Overall, Spencer has coached 26 players who have been top-10 round picks in the draft while 19 of those selections are pitchers.
In addition, eight of Spencer's former players have made their MLB debuts, including Texas Tech right-handed pitcher Zach Stewart, who pitched for the Red Raiders in 2008 and was a third-round draft pick.
