Texas Tech Travels to Seattle for Indoor Championships

LUBBOCK, TX - The No. 14 Texas Tech Red Raiders are a 13-seed at ITA National Team Indoor Championships and take on the No. 4 ranked Ohio State University Buckeyes at the Nordstrom Tennis Center at 5:30 p.m. (CT) Friday, Feb. 18.
The University of Washington will host the 37th annual Championship at the Nordstrom Tennis Center and Seattle Sports Club. The Nordstrom Tennis Center is one of the Northwest's most modern indoor tennis facilities. The doors of the indoor facility at the University of Washington opened with dedication ceremonies on June 1, 1989. Later that year, the center was selected by the USTA's Technical Committee as one of the outstanding tennis facilities for 1989.
Of the fifteen No.1 seeds participating in the third-annual ITA Division I Kick-Off Weekend competition, all 15 advanced for the first time, looking for an opportunity to capture the elusive National Team Indoor Championship title. Duke, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisville, Ohio State, Stanford, Tennessee, Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, UCLA, USC and Virginia will join the Huskies of Washington.
"The team is really excited about earning a spot in the team indoor championships," Red Raider head coach Tim Siegel said before the team departed Wednesday for Seattle. "Ohio State will be a very tough opponent and they are very well coached."
Texas Tech (6-1) is currently ranked No. 14 in the latest Campbell/ITA College Tennis Rankings with victories over #19 Cal, #31 Fresno State, #35 LSU, #52 UC-Irvine, and #54 San Diego State. The Red Raiders have three players ranked in singles - #18 Gonzalo Escobar, #22 Raony Carvalho, and #116 Rafael Garcia. Texas Tech also has two tandems ranked in doubles - #59 Gonzalo Escobar/Victor Manzini and #76 Raony Carvalho/Rafael Garcia.
Ohio State (9-0) is ranked #4 in the Campbell/ITA College Tennis Rankings with victories over #16 Georgia, #18 Ole Miss, #35 LSU, #52 UC-Irvine and #75 William & Mary. The Buckeyes lead the field with seven players ranked in singles (#5 Blaz Rola, #21 Chase Buchanan, #45 Matt Allare, #55 Devin McCarthy, #86 Peter Kobelt, #103 Ille Van Engelen, and #111 Nelson Vick). OSU also has three teams ranked in doubles (#6 Buchanan/Rola, #10 Allare/Kobelt and #66 McCarthy/Balazs Novak).
