LUBBOCK, TX - The No. 14 Texas Tech men's tennis team lost to the No. 13 Kentucky Wildcats in the Intercollegiate Tennis Associations' National Men's Team Indoor Championship consolation match at the Seattle Tennis Club in Seattle, Wash., on Saturday, 4-1.
The Wildcats won the doubles point for a 1-0 lead in the match. Kentucky won at No. 6 singles and No. 1 singles for a 3-0 lead before junior Raony Carvalho gave the Red Raiders their first point in the match. UK's Alberto Gonzalez clinched the match for the Wildcats with his win at No. 4 singles.
The 2011 ITA National Men's Team Indoor Championship, the signature indoor team tournament of the college tennis season, features 16 of the top men's programs in the nation. The University of Washington serves as the host of the 37th-running of the event, which will take place at UW's Nordstrom Tennis Center and the Seattle Tennis Club.
Texas Tech lost in the opening round of the event to fourth-seeded Ohio State, 4-1, Friday night, moving the Red Raiders into the consolation bracket. Texas Tech will face the loser of the Washington-Texas A&M match Sunday evening.
Coach Tim Siegel, "Give the credit to Kentucky, they played very well today. They are a very good indoor team. We competed well and had our chances. Had we been able to capture the tiebreaker at No. 4 singles, we would have had three matches playing in the third set."
