LUBBOCK, Texas - Kelsey Dennis allowed only one hit over five innings to lead No. 19 Texas Tech to an 8-0 victory over Howard Friday afternoon in the first game of the Red Raider Classic at Rocky Johnson Field.
Howard began the game with a leadoff double from Christine Sborz, but Dennis settled down and did not allow another hit in the game as the southpaw faced only three batters over the minimum. Dennis (4-0) added six strikeouts in the circle to garner her fourth win of the year.
The one-hitter was the second of the year for Dennis as she also one-hit Bryant on Feb. 19. She has not allowed a run over her last 10 innings as well, pitching two-straight shutouts.
The Tech offense gave Dennis plenty of support, beginning early in the first inning as Cydney Allen knocked in two runs off a triple to right field. Logan Hall drove in Allen a few minutes later with a sacrifice fly to left field, giving Tech an early 3-0 lead.
Following another run in the second, Allen got the Red Raiders going once again in the third inning, leading off with a double to right field. Pinch runner Meredith Heath later scored off a Raven Richardson sacrifice fly as Tech expanded its lead to 5-0.
The Red Raiders put the game away in the fifth, ending its fourth-straight game due to the run rule. Tech received RBIs from Richardson, Randi Tongate, and Ashley Hamada to keep the Red Raiders (17-0) undefeated on the season.
Carly Martin (2-1) took the loss for Howard (3-5) after allowing eight runs off eight hits and five walks in a complete game effort.
Howard began the day with a 10-3 loss to Dayton. The Red Raiders face the Flyers in Friday's final game later this afternoon.
