LUBBOCK, TX - The No. 19 Texas Tech Red Raiders came back strong in their singles matches after losing the doubles point to post a 5-2 victory over No. 27 Tulsa at the McLeod Tennis Center.
In doubles action, the Golden Hurricane captured the third spot with Japie De Klerk and Rusty Turpin beating Jeff Bryan and David Pace, 8-4. Red Raiders Gonzalo Escobar and Vitor Manzini, ranked No. 44 in the latest ITA postings, downed Tulsa's Grant Ive and Alastair Barnes, 8-4. In the deciding doubles match, Ashley Watling and Clifford Marsland, No. 22 in the current ITA rankings, stopped Texas Tech's No. 21 duo Raony Carvalho and Rafael Garcia for the doubles point, 8-6.
Red Raider Raphael Pfister evened the match at 1-1 with his 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles over Golden Hurricane Tristan Jackson. Tulsa's Ashley Watling lost to Texas Tech's No. 20 Gonzalo Escobar, 6-3, 6-2, to give the Red Raiders their first lead in the match. No. 25 Raony Carvalho added to the lead with his 7-6, 6-4, win at the second spot over Clifford Marsland. Newcomer Gabriel Wanderley clinched the match for Texas Tech with his win at No. 5 singles over Tulsa's Alastair Barnes, 7-5, 7-6. Tulsa earned another point with Japie De Klerk's win over Rafael Garcia at the third spot. Garcia won the first set, 6-4. De Klerk took the next two sets, 6-4, 6-2. Vitor Manzini completed Texas Tech's scoring with his win at No. 4 singles over Grant Ive. Manzini won the first set, 6-4. Ive took the second set by the same 6-4 score. Manzini closed the match at 5-2 with his 6-1 win in the third set.
Texas Tech meets No. 68 TCU on Sunday in a 3 p.m. (CT) match at the McLeod Tennis Center.
