The Texas Tech coaching staff took a break from preparing for fall camp on Wednesday to help teach the game of football to women from across the city of Lubbock.
A full-house of 300 women arrived at the Texas Tech Football Training Facility to participate in the Tommy Tuberville Women's Football Clinic, benefitting the Women's Protective Services.
"This is a great event," Fritzi Cates of the Women's Protective Services said. "This is about women learning new skills and being a part of the community. It's about education and learning new things, and that's what we encourage our women to do. It ties in very nicely."
Head coach Tommy Tuberville, offensive coordinator Neal Brown and other representatives from the Red Raider football team were present to give "Chalk Talks' and hold discussions on the game of football.
"It gives us a chance to educate about half of our fan base which are women," Brown said. "At the same time we are giving back to a worthy cause. It's a really neat deal, and an event that we always look forward to."
Those who attended the event rotated between several sessions highlighting different aspects of football, including the basics of offense and defense along a weight training session from coach Joe Walker. Women who attended were also able to take photographs with Tuberville, and get a glimpse inside the Texas Tech football facilities.
"The most important thing for me personally is the cause," attendee Jaclyn Basquez said. "I love Texas Tech football and I'm interested in seeing behind the scenes. Being here in this facility is just exciting and I think it's time for football."
For the second consecutive year Wells Fargo Bank sponsored the event. Last year the event helped raise funds for the Susan G. Kommen foundation.
"To be able to expose the behind-the-scenes of Texas Tech football and let them learn a little more about Texas Tech's part in giving back to the community and what Women's Protective Services does for the community says a lot," Wells Fargo Representative Redina Fraaklin said.
