Bogotá, Columbia - Texas Tech senior Raony Carvalho, competing as an amateur, advanced to the semifinals of the ITF Futures Copa Babolat at the Hacienda Club on Thursday with a walkover win over eighth-seeded Eduardo Struvay.
A native of Brazilia, Brazil, it was Carvalho's third singles win in three days, after recording three-set victories over Sweden's Christian Lindell and Brazil's Thales Turini. Carvalho's run has been impressive, as he has now secured wins over three of the top 500 players in the world - Lindell (311), Struvay (378) and Turini (478).
Carvalho's success comes on the heels of his first professional win, as he teamed with Brazil's Fabiano De Paula to upend American Peter Aarts and New Zealand's Arten Sitak, 6-3, 6-3, and claim the ITF Futures F4 Medallion doubles title on Sunday.
Carvalho, the only All-American in Red Raider history, was named 2012 ITA Texas Region Player to Watch.
