Red Raider Tennis Opens Season In Midland

Rafael Garcia advanced to the third round of the prestigious Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational on Friday.

MIDLAND, Texas - Texas Tech's Raphael Pfister and Rafael Garcia advanced to the third round of the men's singles draw at the Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational on Friday.
"You want to get a lot of matches at events like this," said Texas Tech head coach Tim Siegel. "We are still in the tournament. We have worked extremely hard in the offseason and in our conditioning and I think we played well for the first day.
"It was a good day and we were successful in our super tiebreakers," added Siegel. "I thought all three players completed very well and that was what I was looking for today."
Jeff Bryan started off the day for the Red Raiders with a first round win over Jason Lateko of UT-Arlington, 6-4, 4-6, 10-3. Pfister added a first round win over UTA's David Subirats, 6-3, 6-1.
Garcia, who secured a first round bye, used the super tiebreaker to upend Texas' Jacoby Lewis, 6-7, 6-4, 10-8. Pfister added an 11-9 super tiebreaker victory over Boise State's Scott Sears, 5-7, 6-3, 11-9. Bryan fell in straight sets to Jorban Szabo, 6-1, 6-1.
In doubles play, Bryan and Pfister fell in the opening round to TCU's Paul Chappell and Daniel Sanchez, 9-8.
The Red Raiders resume play at 9 a.m. on Saturday. Pfister faces Justin To of Rice, who is a member of the Hong Kong Davis Cup Team, while Garcia takes on Maryland's Vlad Stafan, who is the former national junior runner-up in Romania.
