LUBBOCK, Texas - Craig Wells, who has served in the Texas Tech University Athletics Department for the last nine years, has been named the school's first assistant athletic director for basketball operations, announced Red Raider head coach Billy Gillispie.
"We are really excited about Craig being able to focus his attention fully on men's basketball," said Gillispie. "He has given his dedication and attention to Texas Tech for many years. He is very connected at the University and in the community. We are definitely honored to be working with him as we try to accomplish great things here at Texas Tech."
Wells joined the Texas Tech Athletics staff in 2002, and most recently oversaw external operations.
"I am excited about being a part of Billy Gillispie's program," said Wells. "I look forward to many great years under the leadership of coach Gillispie."
A native of Hobbs, N.M., Wells has been a Lubbock resident for the past 30 years. Prior to joining Texas Tech, he served as the station manager/general manager for 18 years at KCBD Newschannel 11 (NBC Affiliate). While at KCBD he helped make the station the most watched and most profitable in the Lubbock market.
Joining athletics was not a major move for Wells as he spent nine years as a coach. He served five years as both a head coach and an assistant in basketball and football coach at Roswell Goddard High School (Roswell, N.M.). He was also the head basketball coach at Gallup High School (Gallup, N.M.) for one year and the head basketball coach at Lubbock High for three years.
Wells currently serves on the LP&L (Lubbock Power & Light) Board of Directors, is a past chairman of United Way and past president of the Lubbock Rotary Club. He earned his bachelor's degree from Central Oklahoma in 1972 and his master's degree from Eastern New Mexico in 1978. Craig and his wife Kathy have been married for 39 years and have three daughters; Melanie Cates, Amy Thompson and Christy Sanders. They are the proud grandparents of six: Jacob, Abbey, J. Ryan, Gracie, Micah and Josh.
