CAREER NIGHT FOR STEPHENS
Eric Stephens has embraced his role as a starter as he set career highs in both attempts and yards. The junior carried the ball 26 times for 134 yards and scored two touchdowns on the ground. His previous highs were 21 attempts (Texas State, 2011) and 126 yards (Northwestern, 2011).
KICKOFF RETURN RECORDS BROKEN
Ben McRoy broke the single-game record for kickoff returns and yardage. The sophomore returned seven kicks for 203 yards on the night and gave the Red Raiders an advantage in field position all night. Ivory McCann held the record for number of returns with six set in 2001 versus Texas, and Eric Stephens held the previous yardage record with 182-yards against Texas in 2009.
FIRST HALF NOTES
Nevada held a 14-7 lead over the Red Raiders at halftime.
Texas Tech has now trailed at the half in both home games of the 2011 season. The Red Raiders trailed Texas State 10-9 in the season opener on Sept. 3, but went on to win 50-10.
Junior safety DJ Johnson led the defense with 10 first half tackles. That total was the most by a Red Raider in the first half of a game since Marlon Williams registered 10 in the first half at Texas A&M on Oct. 18, 2008.
NOTING THE RED RAIDERS
Freshman running back Kenny Williams made his first appearance of the season on Texas Tech's second offensive possession. Williams is the 11th true freshman to earn playing time this season.
Sophomore Eric Ward scored Texas Tech's first touchdown of the game on a two-yard pass from Seth Doege with 9:32 remaining in the first half. The touchdown was his fourth of the season.
With 11:04 remaining in the third quarter, Eric Stephens rushed for six yards and that was enough to move him past Tyrone Thurman into 10th place on the school's career all-purpose yards list with 3,415. After tonight's game, Stephens has amassed 3,578 all-purpose yards in his three-year career at Texas Tech.
Eric Stephens cut into a 21-7 Nevada lead with 8:22 remaining in the third quarter when he scored on a four-yard rush. The touchdown was his fourth of the season and he has now scored in each of the last five games dating back to the 2010 season.
Justin Keown, who suffered a torn ACL prior to the start of the season, came into the game at center in the third quarter following an injury to Mickey Okafor.
Freshman tight end Jace Amaro caught his second touchdown pass of the season with 4:12 remaining in the third quarter. The touchdown was an eight-yard strike by Seth Doege.
TEAM NOTES
The score with 36 seconds left to play is the first time Tech has scored in the final minute to win a game since the 2008 thriller with Texas. The Red Raiders defeated the Longhorns on a 28-yard pass to Michael Crabtree from Graham Harrell on that night.
