When a team brings back 80 percent of its innings from the previous year, it is imperative that incoming pitchers either have the ability to come in and pitch right away or have time to learn from the returning experienced pitchers.
The Red Raider baseball program believes that junior-college transfer right-handed pitcher Shane Broyles is a pitcher that is ready to come in and contribute immediately.
Broyles spent the past two seasons playing at Seminole State College, a traditional powerhouse JUCO program in Seminole, Okla. Broyles ended his Trojans career with a 7-1 record in 2011 with a 2.80 ERA in 64 innings pitched.
Broyles was consistent in his two-year junior college career as he went 5-3 with 63.1 innings pitched as a freshman in 2010 with 45 strikeouts and 22 walks allowed.
In addition, Broyles is one of three Red Raiders who spent this past summer playing in the Northwoods League. Broyles played for the Waterloo Bucks while Rusty Shellhorn (Madison Mallards) and Brennan Moore (Mankato MoonDogs) also played in the summer collegiate league.
"Shane is a very exciting guy for us," four-year head coach Dan Spencer said. "He has a very good arm, a very easy arm. He has some experience from the JUCO level. He is working on a slider. We have been working with him on a couple of things, just a few minor adjustments. He is a smart kid and throws a lot of strikes. He has very good command."
Broyles was impressive this summer while pitching for the Bucks. He posted 54 strikeouts in 47 innings pitched with allowing just 19 walks. His top performance came against Eau Claire in a 5-4 win when he pitched seven innings while allowing just two earned runs with 12 strikeouts.
