ORLAND, Fla. - Texas Tech battled without its top player on Saturday, forcing everyone to play up a spot in the lineup at the Gardnar Mulloy Miami Invitational.
The Red Raiders were without the services of Raony Carvalho, who injured his arm.
"I thought the team played well today despite the adversity," said Red Raider head coach Tim Siegel. "They gave great effort today and we lost three matches in the third set. All in all, it was a good weekend for us."
For the three-day event, Texas Tech went 14-9 in singles and 7-4 in doubles play against three nationally-ranked programs - No. 11 Texas A&M, No. 17 Illinois and No. 31 Miami.
Freshman Francisco Zambon, playing in his first collegiate event went 3-0 in singles play after surviving a three-set jaunt with Illinois' Tim Kopinski, 1-6, 6-1, 6-3. Vitor Manzini also went 3-0 on the weekend with a three-set win over the Illini's Bruno Abdelnour.
More impressively, Manzini also went 3-0 in doubles with teammate Gonzalo Escobar. The duo dropped Texas A&M's Alexis Klegou and Jordan Szabo, 8-5 on Saturday.
Illinois Roy Kalmanovic was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player, while Texas Tech's Escobar was honored with the Gardnar Mulloy Sportsmanship Award.
The Red Raiders return to action on Friday when Texas Tech hosts Tulane at the McLeod Tennis Center to open the dual match season.
