Texas Tech Head Coach Billy Gillispie
Opening Statement
"Just a whipping from a good team, we didn't respond well had too many errors to beat a team at home or on the road or anywhere when they're making shots and we have a long way to go but we will eventually get there."
On not responding well to adversity
"We don't respond well to adversity in practice or in games. There is going to be parts of games where teams are going to go up because all the teams we play are very good so you have to be tough enough in the mind to say ok we have to dig in, or say ok we turned it over but we are going to get a stop, and when we turn it over even if it doesn't lead to an easy basket we aren't being tough enough, defensively to stop anybody. When it happens we come down and start to panic or not carryout an assignment and it snowballs and before you know it you're down 13 at the half."
On how Robert Lewandowski played
"I thought he was great today, offensively, but defensively he has to be more of a presence because he was in a help position all day and should have made more plays. Clark was kind of in the same position and he had three charges and Lew did have some blocks, I think he had four blocks today, but offensively he was much better we just didn't give him any help, but I thought Lew would have the opportunity for a real good game today by the way they were going to play the high post, they weren't really going to guard him and then he did a real good job in the low post on scoring but I thought that's the way he'd play because that's the way he's practiced."
On needing more then one guy score all the points
"Well he would have had to gotten 77 today if we were only going to win with one guy, but you're right that's the thing that's frustrating for me with this team is that you don't know what you are going to get from anyone, other then Bean (Javarez Willis) really guarding the ball, I know Bean is going to try and guard the ball but that's all I really know for sure going into a game and as you get better there are certain things that happen in a game you know these guys are going to get to the foul line five times, maybe eight times on a big day, or this guy, you can pencil this guy in for nine rebounds, and this guy is going to do this or that, but right now I have no idea what's going to happen and it's all based on practice with me. It's the same way in practice and our practice habits are inconsistent just like our game performance is. So those are the steps you have to take to be a better team and we are going to take all those steps to be a really good team and take all those steps most importantly to be a really good program."
Texas Tech Player Quotes
Senior Robert Lewandowski
On having one stretch during the game where Tech can't make baskets
"Yeah it is frustrating, first I'd like to give the glory to God thank you to everything he's done, but yeah it is pretty frustrating seems like we get ourselves in these real good spots to win and then we just kind of fall apart. It's a mental thing and it's a physical thing and we just have to stay smart so we don't fall apart and keep fighting because it's right there we have a chance in every single game we play, it's just got to change."
On having one of his best games of the season
"I'm supposed to extenuate the positive but I've been stinking it up pretty bad, especially the last five games, so that was part of it. Part of it too was my teammates just gave me the ball where I could be most effective and I got to the foul line which made things a little bit easier, I didn't hit every shot and air balled one, which is always embarrassing, but at the same time I feel comfortable and confident with my shot and like I said my teammates got me the ball where I needed it, so give the credit to them too."
On what Clark Lammert brings to the game and to the team
"Clark is one of the hardest players if not the hardest players on the team consistently. We have some guys who show up on odd days, but Clark shows up every day and doesn't complain and he's been getting a lot of minutes but he still comes in for scout team and no one asks him to do that and it's not really expected to do that, if I was in his position I would be ready to get off the scout team as soon as I can but he still puts in the minutes and he works the hardest everyday in practice so whatever minutes he's gotten he's earned and if anything I think he deserves more but he's definitely a game player and a practice player which is what we need so I'm happy for him."
Freshman Clark Lammert
On what he tries to bring to the game
"When I get in the game I just try and hustle and work hard make hustle plays, those charges, just try and ignite the team and give us something positive and when I get in there I just want to try and give my best."
On why his number was called more tonight
"If you earn it in practice then you're going to get in the game and so when I went in there I just try and spark the team and try to give us something good."
Iowa State Head Coach Fred Hoiberg
On Tyrus McGee's performance
"Tyrus is playing with a lot of confidence right now. He has a very nice rhythm in his shot. He is going into it with one motion and stepping into it, he doesn't have any doubt. He hit shots in the first half when not many other guys were, and he helped us get out to that lead that we had in the first half even though we didn't shoot the ball great in that first half, especially from the three-point line. Tyrus was a lift coming in off the bench for us, with Royce (White) in foul trouble. The thing that kept us in there was that we guarded the heck out of them, and we did a great job on the board limiting them to one offensive rebound in that first half."
On having a fast start in the second half
"The first five minutes we thought were very important in both halves. I thought the first half they made some shots early. We kept our composure, did a good job of coming down and getting some ball movement and player movement. I thought it was a very unselfish game we played today. That ball was moving around and guys were cutting hard. We were setting screens for each other and then the second half we got out to a great start. We came out and hit some shots, continued to get stops and continued to control the boards, and that was very important for us in the second half and when we get those boards, especially Royce, we are a pretty tough team to stop in transition."
On Royce White's performance
"He had close to a triple-double, he had three steals in there as well. I thought he did a good job battling in front in the post, but anytime he has the ball in his hands there is so much attention to him. I thought last game against Oklahoma State he did a really nice job of being aggressive when they weren't double teaming him, but he sees everybody out there. He has eyes in the back of his head, and he gets our guys easy baskets when they are cutting. We had a couple of wide-open looks that we created that we just didn't knock down."
