LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech Red Raider tennis team opens the spring season this week as the nation's No. 22 team, according to the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association Rankings.
The Big 12 Conference has five members in the Top 25 of the ITA Rankings. Only the Southeastern Conference has more teams in the Top 25 with seven.
Gonzalo Escobar will open the spring season ranked 23rd nationally, thanks in large part to strong showing in the fall that saw the senior go 12-3 overall and 6-3 against nationally-ranked opponents.
The Red Raiders will also see the return of Raony Carvalho to the lineup, who took the fall semester off to compete as an amateur on the ITF Futures Tour in South America. Carvalho was named the 2012 Texas Region Player to Watch and is the only All-American in Red Raider history.
In all, the Texas Tech men's tennis schedule features matches against 20 teams ranked in the ITA Top 75.
Texas Tech opens the season at the Miami Hurricane Invitational in Coral Gables, Fla. The Red Raiders will play split squad matches with No. 11 Texas A&M, No. 17 Illinois and No. 31 Miami beginning Thursday.
