Fort Worth, Texas - The No. 22 Texas Tech Red Raiders took down No. 44 TCU, 5-2 Saturday in Fort Worth, Texas at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
"It was a good team win against a very tough and scrappy TCU team," head coach Tim Siegel said. "We need to improve at doubles, but we played well at No. 2, 3, 4 and 5 singles to get the win."
The Horned Frogs won the doubles point. It came down to the No. 2 doubles match but Red Raiders Gonzalo Escobar and Vitor Manzini could not hold off Nick Chapell and Paul Chappell losing 9-8 (5). At No. 1 doubles, Tech's Raony Carvalho and Rafael Garcia topped Will Stein and JT Sundling, 8-4. TCU's Daniel Sanchez and Max Stevens got the victory over Tech's Raphael Pfister and Gabriel Wanderley, 8-4, at the No. 3 spot.
In singles, No. 23 Escobar got the Red Raiders back on track with a win over Sundling, 6-3, 6-2, at the No. 2 singles position. However, TCU's N. Chappell got the Horned Frogs back in the lead beating Carvalho, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, at the No. 1 position. The Red Raiders rebounded when Garcia fought back after a second set loss to defeat Sanchez, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, at the No. 3 spot. Tech's Manzini got the Red Raiders the lead dropping Facundo Lugones, 6-4, 5-7, 6-2, at the No. 4 position. Red Raider Francisco Zambon clinched the win for Tech with a dominating performance over P. Chappell, 6-3, 6-0.
The Red Raiders will be back in action on Feb. 24, at the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic in Montgomery, Ala.
