TEMPE, Ariz. - Rebecca Patton worked around seven Texas Tech hits to shut out the Red Raiders in a 3-0 Cal Pony victory late Saturday night in the Kajikawa Classic finale at the Tempe Sports Complex.
The loss was Tech's (1-4) fourth-straight since taking the season opener Thursday against San Diego State. Cal Pony, on the other end, earned its first win of the season following an 0-3 start.
The Mustangs jumped on Tech and starter Cara Custer early as Kim Westlund drove a RBI double to left center, scoring leadoff hitter Nora Sobczak who singled to start the game.
Cal Poly added two additional runs in both the fourth and fifth innings with Emily Ceccelli delivering the final run off a RBI single down the right field line.
The run was the final one on Custer's (1-3) line as the freshman drew her third-straight loss after giving up three runs off five hits in 4.2 innings.
She gave way to Brittany Talley who kept Cal Poly scoreless over the final 2.1 innings, escaping a seventh inning bases loaded jam in the process to give Tech a chance heading to the bottom of the frame.
It wouldn't matter, though, as Tech could never find a solution for Patton. The Red Raiders put two runners on base twice in the game, once in the first and then again in the fifth inning but failed to convert both opportunities.
Patton (1-1) finished with five strikeouts while only walking one in the complete game effort.
Tech ended the tournament having scored just one run over its final three games, marking the first time the Red Raiders had done so since late in the 2010 season when Tech was shutout by Texas April 6 and then again in the series finale against Nebraska on April 11.
The Red Raiders return to action next weekend at the Louisville Desert Classic in Las Vegas where Tech will play six games over three days beginning next Friday.
