AUSTIN -- Chassidy Fussell scored 20 points and Ashleigh Fontenette added 19 to lead Texas to a 63-54 win over Texas Tech on Wednesday night at the Erwin Center.
Texas (15-10, 5-8 Big 12) used a 10-3 run to tie the game at 45-45 with 6:50 to play, then exchanged leads back and forth with Tech before ending the final five minutes on an 18-5 run.
Tech (17-8, 5-8) built as much as a seven-point lead thanks to the strong play by junior guards Casey Morris (15 points) and Chynna Brown (12 points) along with senior forward Kierra Mallard (12 points). Those three combined for 15 of Tech's 19 field goals, 39 points and 18 rebounds.
The Lady Raiders started off the night much like the game in Lubbock on Jan. 28 when they beat the Longhorns, 75-71. Tech flew out to an 11-4 lead on Morris' seven points and then reclaimed the seven-point advantage in the second half with an 8-2 run.
The Longhorns used the quick speed by guard Yvonne Anderson to push the ball on missed shots and inbounds passes, scoring 15 fastbreak points.
Tech will travel to Waco next to face off against No. 1 Baylor (26-0, 13-0) in hopes of knocking off the top-ranked Lady Bears and creating some space in the Big 12 standings with just five games remaining. Only half a game separates Kansas and Iowa State (6-7) from Texas Tech, Texas and Oklahoma State.
Tech and Baylor tip off at 7 p.m., Saturday at the Ferrell Center.
