LUBBOCK, Texas -
No. 29 Texas Tech (11-6) won all nine matches to roll to a 7-0 win over New Mexico State (4-12) on Sunday at the McLeod Tennis Center.
"Although we won 7-0, it did not feel like a match that we won 7-0," said Red Raider head coach Tim Siegel. "We did not play one through six the way I needed them to play to get ready for conference. It was important that we got the win, but there were some players that could have done a better job. Overall, I am pleased. Now we have to get ready for Baylor.
"We were really excited about the fans that came out, especially the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. The crowd really makes a difference. That is especially true when we take on Texas A&M and Texas later in the season."
Texas Tech started the day with a sweep of doubles, led by the No. 1 tandem of Raony Carvalho and Gonzalo Escobar, who recorded a swift 8-2 win over Marc Westgate and Luis Ramirez. Carvalho and Escobar are 6-0 at No. 1 double. Tech's Rafael Garcia and Vitor Manzini added an 8-4 win at No. 2 and Jeff Bryan and Raphael Pfister won 8-5 at No. 3
The Red Raiders took a quick 3-0 lead after Carvalho won No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-2 over Westgate and Manzini picked up a 6-1, 6-4 staight-set win over Germain Degardin. Escobar added the match-clinching point with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Matej Stakne at the No. 1 position.
Francisco Zambon and Garcia each won pro set tiebreakers to win No. 5 and No. 3 singles respectively, while Raphael Pfister topped NMSU's Patrick Pfister, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
Texas Tech returns to action on Saturday in Waco, when the Red Raiders will open Big 12 Conference play against No. 35 Baylor at 1 p.m.
