STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning on a sacrifice fly with one out to defeat Texas Tech 2-1 in their Big 12 series opener on Friday night at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
Texas Tech (22-18, 3-10 Big 12) and Oklahoma State (20-17, 6-7 Big 12) both had solid starting pitching performances while the Cowboys took advantage of a walk, hit-by-pitch and base hit in the final half inning to improve to 17-3 at home this season.
With the score tied 1-1 in the bottom of the ninth, Tech reliever Jerad McCrummen came into pitch and recorded the first out on a grounder to shortstop Tim Proudfoot. A full-count walk and a hit-by-pitch followed to give the Cowboys runners at first and second base.
Pinch hitter Victor Romero singled to left field, but the runners stopped at second and third base. With one out, Oklahoma State pinch hit for the second straight batter, this time it was Jordan Mings and he delivered with a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring right fielder Trey Whaley (walked) for the game-winning run.
McCrummen (2-2) suffered his second loss of the season while OSU reliever Blake Barnes (4-3) earned the win while recording two outs with a strikeout in the ninth.
Both starting pitchers were impressive as Tech's right-handed pitcher John Neely took a no-decision pitching 6.1 innings allowing just one run on five hits with five strikeouts and a walk. OSU's left-hander Andrew Heaney exited in the ninth with one out after throwing 8.1 innings with nine strikeouts and two walks while allowing one run on six base hits.
The Red Raiders scored the first run of the game in the fifth inning on junior Nick Hanslik's RBI single down the left-field line, which scored designated hitter Stephen Hagen who doubled to left field.
Oklahoma State tied the game an inning later with a two-out, RBI single up the middle by catcher Jared Womack.
Texas Tech first baseman Scott LeJeune was the only Red Raider with a multi-hit game going 2-for-4 while hitting his 56th career double (14th of the season) in the seventh inning. Hagen (1-for-3, run) was the only other Tech player with an extra-base hit while he scored Tech's only run.
Texas Tech and Oklahoma State will continue their three-game series on Saturday with a 2 p.m. first pitch at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium in Stillwater.
