LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech track and field team will travel to two high-profile meets this weekend in their final road trip before the home opener on April 14. The squad is set to take the bulk of its athletes to the Battle on the Bayou in Baton Rouge, La. while a senior Rose Tanui will travel west to compete in the Stanford Invitational.
The Battle on the Bayou is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Saturday in Baton Rouge, La.
For head coach Wes Kittley, the two road tests signify just the type of challenging schedule he has tested his team with all year.
"We are just trying to put our kids in that type of situation week after week," Kittley said. "It has probably been the best schedule in my 13 years. We are putting the kids in the heat of the battle a little bit more than we ever have."
The No. 7 Red Raiders and No. 10 Lady Raiders coming off of an impressive showing at the historic Texas Relays where they brought home a total of 14 top five finishes including a new school record in the women's heptathlon.
Tanui is set to compete in the women's 10,000 meter run Friday night, while Tech will begin competing in the Battle on the Bayou on Saturday.
"The Stanford Invitational will be one of the best distance meets in the country," distance coach Jon Murray said. "The weather conditions will be fantastic, and the competition will certainly be there. Some of the best marks in the country will be from this meet."
The Battle on the Bayou will prove to be yet another competitive meet as both the LSU men's and women's squads are ranked No. 2 in the country. Meanwhile, Mississippi State and its No. 9-ranked men's squad are scheduled to compete in the meet as well.
