LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) - Jaye Crockett scored 21 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead Texas Tech to an 80-71 win over Texas Southern on Monday night in the opening round of the Progressive Legends Classic.
Dusty Hannahs was the itch that wouldn't go away for the Tigers, coming off the bench and scoring 17 of his 19 points for the Red Raiders in the second half - all at crucial moments.
Robert Turner added 15 points, and Jordan Tolbert added 11 points and five boards for Texas Tech.
Jose Rodriguez led Texas Southern with 29 points and 10 rebounds and Ray Penn added 15 points - 13 in the second half - before fouling out late.
Texas Tech (3-1) kept a narrow lead for most of the game, but allowed TSU (2-3) to regain a pair of one-point leads early in the second half before pulling away in the final minutes.
The Red Raiders tied the school record with 12 blocks on the night, equaling the mark set on Dec. 22, 1998, versus Pepperdine at the Pearl Harbor Shootout in Laie, Hawai'i. Kader Tapsoba led the way with four blocks, while Dejan Kravic and Tolbert each had two and Turner, Crockett, Randy Onwuasor and Aaron Ross each had one.
Texas Tech also committed a season-low five turnovers on the night. It has been a span of 278 games since the last time the Red Raiders committed jut five turnovers in a game. The last time it happened was Feb. 3, 2004, when Texas Tech host Baylor at the United Spirit Arena.
The Red Raiders return to action in the second round of the Progressive Legends Classic on Thursday at 7 p.m. against South Dakota State at the United Spirit Arena.
