Beckie Called Up To Canadian Senior National Team

Janine Beckie, the 2014 Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year, was called up this week to the Canadian Senior National Team for a series of matches against Sweden. She will likely make her debut with Canada on Wednesday evening.

LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech junior Janine Beckie has been called up to the Canadian Women's National Team for this week's set of friendlies against Sweden, Canada Soccer announced earlier this week.
Beckie, who was part of the Red Raider squad that advanced to the third round of the NCAA Championship this past weekend, learned of the call up following Sunday's match against Florida and traveled to join the team on Monday morning.
"It's an honor to be invited to train and play with some of the best players in the world," said Beckie, the 2014 Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year. "It's a great experience for me as a player and as a young athlete. The atmosphere is incredibly professional and I've already learned a ton. I'm excited to get my hands dirty and learn even more. I'm so blessed to have this opportunity and want to make the most of it."
This is the first time in Beckie's career where she has been selected to the Senior National Team. She previously spent this past summer playing with Canada in the FIFA U-20 World Cup where she led that squad in scoring for the tournament.
Beckie did not play in Canada's first match against Sweden that was played on Monday as she arrived just in time for the match. Canada defeated Sweden via a 1-0 shutout.
The two countries are set to face each other again on Wednesday night in a 9 p.m. CT match at George Allen Field on the campus of Long Beach State University. If Beckie were to play in that match, it would mark her first National Team Cap of her career.
Beckie, who will wear No. 27 for Canada, will be looking to take full advantage of the call up as Canada will name its roster this spring for the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup.
