LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech junior Janine Beckie made her first career appearance with the Canadian Senior National Team on Wednesday evening during its 1-1 draw with Sweden at George Allen Field on the campus of Long Beach State.
The appearance marked the first career cap for Beckie, who received the call up Sunday evening and later arrived in California prior to the first match in the series with Sweden Monday afternoon.
Beckie was inserted into the match at halftime after a scoreless first half. She played the final 45 minutes as Canada overcame a Sweden goal in the 57th minute to tie the match roughly 18 minutes later.
This is the second international experience for Beckie in the past year as she competed with Canada during last summer's FIFA U-20 World Cup. Beckie was Canada's leading scorer in the tournament with two goals and an assist.
Beckie, the 2014 Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year, will continue to train with the Canadian Senior National Team during various points of the spring as she hopes to make the final roster for this summer's FIFA Women's World Cup that will be hosted in Canada.
Her call up followed Texas Tech's season finale against Florida this past Sunday in the third round of the NCAA Championship. Beckie connected on her 17th goal of the season against the Gators and hours later learned she was traveling to California the following day.
Beckie's 17 goals and 38 points this past year rank second all-time in Texas Tech single-season history. She ranked among the top scorers in the country for both categories and will be in contention to potentially earn All-American honors for the second time in her career.
