Red Raiders in the Major Leagues: Week 4 Update

Coulombe was promoted to Double-A Chattanooga after striking out 61 batters in 44.1 innings pitched
Currently, there are 25 former Texas Tech players who are playing with an MLB organization as a player. Throughout the remainder of the summer, Texas Tech athletics communications will provide weekly updates on former Red Raiders competing at the major league and minor league level.
Chad Bettis (RHP - Relief Pitcher - Colorado Rockies)
Bettis has made 17 outings in the big leagues with the Rockies this season with a 0-1 record, 8.59 ERA and 22.0 innings pitched with 13 strikeouts and nine walks allowed. Bettis pitched three seasons at Tech, 2008-2010 and was drafted in 2010 in the second round by the Colorado Rockies.
AJ Ramos (RHP - Relief Pitcher - Miami Marlins)
Ramos remains on the 15-day disabled list. Ramos is among team leaders with 39 appearances (all relief) whiles his 12 holds rank among the tops in the National League. Ramos is 4-0 with three saves, 37.1 innings pitched, 42 strikeouts and 29 walks allowed. During his last 10 outings, Ramos is 1-0 with a 0.87 ERA in 10.1 innings with nine strikeouts. He currently has nine straight outings without allowing an earned run. Ramos pitched four years at Tech, 2006-09, and was drafted in 2009 in the 21st round by the Florida Marlins.
Josh Tomlin (RHP - Starting Pitcher - Cleveland Indians)
Tomlin went into the All-Star break following a no decision at the New York Yankees going seven innings allowing four earned runs on eight hits with five strikeouts and no walks allowed. Tomlin is 5-6 this season with a 4.21 ERA in 12 starts (13 appearances) with one complete game, one shutout and 77.0 innings pitched with 69 strikeouts and nine walks allowed. Tomlin is back in 2014 after missing all of last season after undergoing Tommy John surgery. Tomlin is 5-5 this season with 10 starts (11 appearances) with a 3.78 ERA, 64.1 innings, 58 strikeouts and nine walks allowed. Tomlin pitched one season at Tech in 2006 and was drafted in 2006 in the 19th round by the Cleveland Indians.
Bobby Doran (RHP - Starting Pitcher - Chicago White Sox - Triple-A - Charlotte Knights)
Doran, who has 33 career minor league wins, was part of a trade this past week going from the Houston Astros organization to the Chicago White Sox - where he recently joined Triple-A Charlotte. Doran earned the win in his Charlotte debut on July 13 going five innings allowing four runs on six hits with six strikeouts and three walks in a home win over Syracuse. On the season - all in Triple-A - Doran is 3-4 with a 5.46 ERA in 22 appearances (10 starts) with 85.2 innings, 47 strikeouts and 32 walks. Doran pitched one season at Tech in 2010 and was drafted in 2010 in the third round by the Houston Astros.
Colt Hynes (LHP - Relief Pitcher - Los Angeles Dodgers - Triple-A - Albuquerque Isotopes)
Hynes made a pair of relief outings last week with two innings pitched while not recording a save or a win or loss with two strikeouts and one run allowed on two base hits allowed. Hynes is 0-3 this season with a 4.68 ERA in 35 relief outings with two saves, 42.1 innings, 36 strikeouts and nine walks allowed. Hynes pitched two seasons at Tech, 2006-07, and was drafted in 2007 in the 31st round by the San Diego Padres.
Nathan Karns (RHP - Starting Pitcher - Tampa Bay Rays - Triple-A - Durham Bulls)
Karns currently ranks second in the International League with 99 strikeouts while earning his sixth win of the season last week on July 11 going seven innings allowing just one run on five hits with seven strikeouts and two walks allowed. He is 6-5 this season with a 5.63 ERA in 18 starts with 92.2 innings with 99 strikeouts and 44 walks allowed. Karns pitched two years at Tech, 2008-09, and was drafted in 2009 in the 12th round by the Washington Nationals.
Roger Kieschnick (OF -Arizona Diamondbacks - Triple-A - Reno Aces)
Kieschnick was optioned to Triple-A Reno on July 12 after the D-Backs activated outfielder Mark Trumbo from the disabled list. Kieschnick has played in 19 games at the big-league level this season with a .207 batting average in 29 bat-bats with a double, home run and two RBI. Since rejoining Triple-A Reno, Kieschnick went 0-for-4 on July 12 and then went 2-for-4 on July 13. In 61 games in Triple-A this season he is batting .279 (65-for-233) with 17 doubles, two triples, nine homers and 29 RBI. Kieschnick was a three-year starter for Tech, 2006-08, and was drafted in 2008 in the third round by the San Francisco Giants.
Dustin Richardson (LHP - Relief Pitcher - Los Angeles Angels - Triple-A - Salt Lake Bees)
Richardson returned from the disabled list on July 9 after missing nearly a month with an injury. Richardson made a pair of relief outings last week going 2.1 innings allowing one run on one hit with two strikeouts and a walk. Richardson pitched two seasons at Tech, 2005-06, and was drafted in 2006 in the fifth round by the Boston Red Sox.
Zach Stewart (RHP - Starting Pitcher - Atlanta Braves - Triple-A - Gwinnett Braves)
Stewart is currently on the 7-day disabled list. Stewart has made 10 starts and 12 overall outings this season for Triple-A Gwinnett. He is 4-3 with a 3.88 ERA in 72.0 innings with 36 strikeouts and 22 walks. He won his most recent outing in relief going 5.2 innings allowing just one earned run on six hits with two walks allowed on June 8. Stewart pitched one season at Tech in 2008 and was drafted in 2008 in the third round by the Cincinnati Reds.
Daniel Coulombe (LHP - Relief Pitcher - Los Angeles Dodgers - Double-A - Chattanooga Lookouts)
Coulombe was recently promoted to Double-A Chattanooga after having a stellar season in Class-A Advanced in the California League this season. In Class A Advanced, Coulombe was 3-0 with a 3.05 ERA in 31 outings with five saves, 44.1 innings, 33 hits allowed and struck out 61 batters with 17 walks allowed. Coulombe pitched two years at Tech, 2011-12, and was drafted in 2012 in the 25th round by the Los Angeles Dodgers.
James Leverton (LHP -Relief Pitcher - Miami Marlins - Double-A - Jacksonville Suns)
Leverton is currently on the seven-day disabled list with his most recent outing on July 6. Leverton was up for big-league spring training but has been in Double-A this season where he has made seven relief outings with a 0-1 record, 4.15 ERA, 8.2 innings pitched and has seven strikeouts and three walks allowed. He is one of three Red Raiders from the 2008 MLB Draft class (Roger Kieschnick, Zach Stewart) who remain in professional baseball. Leverton pitched three years at Tech, 2006-08, and was drafted in 2008 in the 8th round by the Chicago Cubs.
Kelby Tomlinson (SS -San Francisco Giants - Double-A - Richmond Flying Squirrels)
Tomlinson is one of the hottest hitters in Double-A Eastern League with a .324 (12-for-37) average over his last 10 games, which includes four straight multi-hit games (July 8-11). He leads the Eastern League with 37 stolen bases and is batting .270 (76-for-282) on the season with 38 runs and five doubles and three triples with 25 RBI and 31 walks. Tomlinson played one year at Tech in 2011 and was drafted in 2011 in the 12th round by the San Francisco Giants.
Duke von Schamann (RHP - Starting - Cleveland Indians - Double-A - Akron RubberDucks)
von Schamann suffered his fifth straight loss on July 13 allowing five runs on 10 hits in seven innings with two strikeouts and a walk. He is 5-5 this season with a 4.47 ERA in 19 outings (15 starts) with one save, 100.2 innings, 47 strikeouts and 26 walks allowed. von Schamann pitched two years at Tech, 2011-12, and was drafted in 2012 in the 14th round by the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Barrett Barnes (OF -Pittsburgh Pirates - Class A Advanced - Bradenton Marauders)
Barnes was promoted to Class A Advanced Bradenton after batting .313 (5-for-16) in the Gulf Coast League. Barnes is 1-for-6 in Class A Advanced with a double and two walks with a strikeout in two games played. Barnes played three years at Tech, 2010-12, and was drafted in 2012 in the first round by the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Shane Broyles (RHP - Relief Pitcher - Colorado Rockies - Class A Advanced - Modesto Nuts)
Broyles has made 32 outings - all in relief - for Modesto this season with a 2-2 record and 4.21 ERA in 47.0 innings. He has 53 strikeouts and 18 walks allowed while opponents are batting .249. During his last 10 outings, Broyles is 1-0 with a 1.10 ERA in 16.1 innings with 20 strikeouts and seven walks allowed. Broyles pitched one year at Tech in 2012 and was drafted in 2012 in the 14th round by the Colorado Rockies.
Reid Redman (RHP - Florida Marlins - Class A Advanced - Jupiter Hammerheads)
Redman was named to the Florida State League All-Star Game after starting the year as one of the top relievers in Class A-Advanced. Redman - who also made one outing in Double-A this season - is 2-1 with a 2.70 ERA in 28 outings with four saves with 40.0 innings with 45 strikeouts and nine walks allowed. He made three outings last week while allowing four earned runs in 3.2 innings of work with five strikeouts. Redman has five appearances with multiple strikeouts over his last 10 outings. Redman played two years at Tech, 2011-12, and was drafted in 2012 in the 23rd round by the Tampa Bay Rays.
Brett Bruening (RHP - Chicago White Sox - Single-A - Kannapolis Intimidators)
Bruening is currently on the seven-day disabled list. Bruening, who hasn't pitched the past three seasons, returned to minor league baseball in 2014 and has made three outings this season - all in relief - with three innings pitched, a walk and a strikeout. Bruening played one year at Tech, 2010, and was drafted in 2010 in the 42nd round by the Chicago White Sox.
Jamodrick McGruder (2B - Cincinnati Reds - Single-A - Dayton Dragons)
McGruder, a 2012 All-American at Texas Tech, hit his second homer of the season on Sunday and has hit safely in six of his last nine games played. He is batting .250 (59-for-236) this season with 32 runs, nine doubles, six triples and 19 RBI and is 8-of-14 in stolen base attempts. McGruder played three years at Tech, 2010-2012, and was drafted in 2012 in the ninth round by the Seattle Mariners.
Andre Wheeler (LHP - Relief Pitcher - Chicago White Sox - Single-A - Kannapolis Intimidators)
Wheeler has pitched in relief and started this season with 20 outings and 10 starts with a 1-2 record, 3.38 ERA and 64.0 innings pitched with 78 strikeouts and 21 walks allowed. Wheeler struck out nine batters in four innings during his most recent outings from the bullpen with one run allowed on three hits with two walks allowed. Wheeler has 29 strikeouts over his last 17.2 innings pitched. Wheeler pitched three years at Tech, 2011-13, and was drafted in 2013 in the 15th round by the Chicago White Sox.
Trey Masek (RHP - Relief Pitcher - Chicago Cubs - Short-Season A - Boise Hawks)
Masek, who was held in extended spring training due to injury, has made two relief outings this season with a 9.82 ERA in 3.2 innings with five strikeouts and four walks allowed. Masek's first outing came on June 18 when he struck out four in two scoreless innings. Masek pitched three years at Tech, 2011-13, and was drafted in 2013 in the fifth round by the Chicago Cubs.
Jerad McCrummen (RHP - Relief Pitcher - Colorado Rockies - Short-Season A - Tri-City Dust Devils)
McCrummen made two outings last week - his most recent pitching three scoreless innings for his third win of the season with one strikeout and just two hits allowed. He hasn't allowed a run during his last two outings with 5.2 innings pitched. McCrummen is 3-0 with a 2.11 ERA in 10 outings this season with 21.1 innings, 18 strikeouts and five walks allowed. McCrummen pitched three years at Tech, 2011-2013, and was drafted in 2013 in the 23rd round by the Colorado Rockies.
Chris Sadberry (LHP - Starting Pitcher - Miami Marlins - Short-Season A - Batavia Muckdogs)
Sadberry made his second pro outings on July 11 allowing three runs on five hits in a two-inning start with one walk allowed. Sadberry is 0-0 with a 6.75 ERA in two starts with four innings pitched, three strikeouts and a walk allowed. Sadberry pitched one year at Tech, 2014, and was drafted in 2014 in the sixth round by the Miami Marlins.
Jonny Drozd (LHP - New York Yankees - Rookie League - Gulf Coast League Yankees)
Drozd made his professional career debut striking out three batters in a perfect relief inning on July 15. Drozd pitched two years at Tech, 2013-14, and signed a free agent contract in 2014 with the New York Yankees.
Adam Kirsch (OF - New York Yankees - Rookie League - Gulf Coast League Yankees)
Kirsch had a memorable first couple games in professional baseball going 5-for-10 with four runs, two doubles, two home runs - a grand slam - and seven RBI during his first two career games in professional baseball. Kirsch finished last week going 0-for-2 with a walk on July 5. Kirsch played one year at Tech, 2014, and signed a free agent contract in 2014 with the New York Yankees.
Hunter Redman (C - Los Angeles Dodgers - Rookie League - Ogden Raptors)
Redman is batting .188 in six games with a run scored, double and RBI. Redman went 2-for-3 during his first career pro start on July 2. Redman played one year at Tech, 2014, and was drafted in 2014 in the eighth round by the Los Angeles Dodgers.
