RUIDOSO, N.M. -- The Texas Tech Lady Raider Cross Country team started the 2014 season by sweeping the double dual at the Texas Tech--UTEP--New Mexico State Triangular, in Ruidoso, N.M., on Friday.
The Lady Raiders knocked off UTEP, 21-40, and New Mexico State, 22-34.
Sophomore Jocelyn Caro won the individual title on the women's side, completing the three-mile run in 17:32.50, more than 16 seconds ahead of the field. Caro was joined in the top five by Madeline Livergood (18:07.40), who took fourth, and Sharlene Nickle (18:19.40), who took fifth.
"This was a good start for the women," head coach Jon Murray said. "There are some areas where we can improve, so starting with two wins is great. I was proud of the effort from the women."
On the men's side, Tech defeated New Mexico State, 23-34, but fell victim to All-American and track & field national champion Anthony Rotich and UTEP, 25-32.
Evans Tuitoek ran the four miles in 21:18.30 to take fifth, and Nick Rivera finished right next to him, in sixth, with a time of 21:18.60.
"The men are a young team, so this was a learning experience," Murray said. "Once we get to full force and gain some more experience, this team can do well."
Texas Tech cross country will hold its lone home meet of the 2014 season, the Red Raider Open, on Sept. 12.
