LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech head coach Tim Siegel has announced the signing of Victor Cornea, a transfer from Romania who will join the program in January.
"We are so excited to have Victor join our team," said Siegel. "He has experience playing high in the lineup in both singles and doubles. We feel like he has the ability to make an immediate impact in the top half of our lineup."
Cornea, a 6-5, 185-pound native of Sibiu, Romania, transfers from Middle Tennessee State, where he was 30-18 playing primarily No. 2 and No. 3 singles at Middle Tennessee. In doubles, he has played all three positions, but mainly No. 1 in the lineup, going 27-22.
Prior to Middle Tennessee, he was ranked as high as No. 126 in the world, as well as the No. 1 player in Romania. In August of 2011, Cornea won the Wilson-Tivoli Trophy championship in Timisoara, Romania and did not drop a set in the tournament. Cornea has also played in the Orange Bowl International and Eddie Herr International Junior Tennis Championships in Florida for six straight years.
Cornea, who is taking the semester off before transferring to Texas Tech, has gone 31-12 as an amateur on the ITF Professional Circuit this past summer. He has also gone 18-9 in doubles play. His efforts have raised his ITF world ranking to No. 963 in singles and No. 695 in doubles. Cornea advanced to the semifinals of the ITF Romania F9 Futures. He also advanced to the finals in doubles in four events, going 2-2 - winning the ITF Romania F6 Futures and the ITF Romania F8 Futures.
He is expected to report to campus in January.
After opening the season this past weekend in Midland, Texas Tech will return to action this weekend in Houston at the Rice Invitational.
