The 17th-ranked Red Raiders (8-3-4, 1-2-2) fell to the Texas Longhorns (7-3-4, 4-1-1) 2-1 in double overtime Friday night at the John Walker Soccer Complex.
"I feel for our girls, I really do," said head coach Tom Stone. "I don't think we have ever battered Texas like we did tonight. The game wasn't even close in terms of play, but give Texas credit they held in and bent, but didn't break and when they got their one chance at the end of the game they executed it well. For that they deserved the win."
The Red Raiders got off to an early start as senior forward Janine Beckie recorded her eighth goal of the season and sixth goal in the last five matches in the 27th minute. Freshman Gwennie Puente sent a ball into the top of the box to Beckie who turned and fired a shot that sailed just past the outstretched hands of Abby Smith to give the Red Raiders a 1-0 lead.
Just three minutes later, the Longhorns would find the equalizer as Mikayla Flores found herself on the end of Alexa Adams' cross from the left side of the box. Flores gathered the pass and scorched a shot past Carissa Christensen to even the score at 1-1 heading into halftime.
Texas Tech headed into the locker room trailing in shots 6-3, but found themselves tied at 3-3 in corner kicks.
As the second half began, the Red Raiders dominated possession and scoring opportunities, outshooting the Longhorns 7-2 and outpacing the Horns 7-0 in the final 45 minutes of regulation in corner kicks.
With neither team able to break the draw after 90 minutes of play, the match went to extra time. The Red Raiders dominance on the offensive end as Tech was able to outshoot the Longhorns 4-1 in the first overtime period.
In the second overtime period, Tech looked poised to break the draw with a pair of breakaways that missed just wide of the goal. Leading 4-0 in shot attempts in the second overtime, Texas Tech's keeper booted a ball nearly three quarters the length of the field to Lindsey Meyer who headed the ball forward to Jasmine Hart who nailed the game winning goal for the Horns.
Friday's result pushed the all-time series record between the Red Raiders and Longhorns to 6-14-14 and represented the second straight double overtime match between the two squads. Texas Tech now occupies sixth place in the conference standings with five competition points, while Texas keeps pace with West Virginia and is tied for first.
The Red Raiders will be back in action Sunday afternoon as TTU will travel to Waco to face the Baylor Bears for an important conference match to close out the weekend. Sunday's match is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. and will be televised on FOX Sports Southwest.
