MAHOMES RECORDS ANOTHER STRONG PERFORMANCE AGAINST NO. 5 BAYLOR
• Patrick Mahomes II put together yet another strong performance today in a losing effort as the sophomore finished 32-of-50 for 415 yards and three touchdowns. It was the seventh 300-yard performance for Mahomes and the third time he has gone over 400 yards during his career.
• In his two career starts against Baylor, Mahomes has totaled over 1,000 yards through the air as he has passed for 1,013 yards and nine touchdowns. He finished with 598 yards of passing and six touchdowns in the 2014 meeting against Baylor.
• Mahomes recorded his sixth rushing touchdown of the season in Texas Tech's first drive of the second half as he scampered 25 yards to the endzone. The run marked his longest of his career, breaking his previous mark of 24 yards set earlier this year against Sam Houston State.
Zach Austin, Tony Brown BOTH RECORD OVER 100 YARDS IN CAREER DAYS
• Zach Austin made his first career catch on Texas Tech's opening drive as the sophomore was on the receiving end of a 55-yard touchdown pass from Patrick Mahomes II.
• Tony Brown, meanwhile, joined Austin and fellow receivers Cameron Batson and Jonathan Giles by grabbing his first career touchdown reception with 4:04 remaining in the second quarter.
• Austin and Brown both finished with over 100 yards of receiving, marking the duo the fifth and sixth Red Raiders to go over 100 yards in a game this season, joining the likes of Reginald Davis (Arkansas), Jakeem Grant (UTEP, TCU) and Devin Lauderdale (Sam Houston State, TCU).
• Austin ended the game with 8 receptions for 110 yards while Brown caught 5 passes for 117 yards.
NOTING THE RED RAIDERS
• Cameron Batson recorded Texas Tech's second touchdown of the game with 2:16 remaining in the opening quarter. The 37-yard pass marked the first touchdown reception of Batson's career. Batson matched his career high with three receptions and then set a new career mark with 71 yards of receiving.
• J.J. Gaines' interception just before halftime marked the sixth of his career and the second already. He has now had two interceptions in each of the past three seasons.
• Jonathan Giles recorded the first touchdown of his career with 8:34 remaining in the fourth quarter as he caught a 13-yard pass from Davis Webb. He was one of two true freshmen wide receivers to score in today's game, joining Tony Brown.
• Texas Tech had the following players make career highs in tackles: Thierry Nguema (4) and D'Vonta Hinton (5).
TEAM NOTES
• DeAndre Washington's fumble with 12:03 remaining in the second quarter marked the first time Texas Tech had turned the ball over via fumble this season.
• Texas Tech lost the turnover battle for the first time since facing Baylor in the final game of the 2014 season.
• Texas Tech committed four turnovers in the loss after coming into the contest with only three through the first four games of the season.
• Texas Tech committed a season-high 17 penalties in today's game, one shy of the single-game school record. The Red Raiders were previously one of the least-penalized teams in the Big 12 Conference coming into the game as Texas Tech had been flagged just 21 times through four games.
