WASHINGTON BECOMES FIRST RED RAIDER SINCE HANSPARD TO RUSH FOR 1,000 YARDS IN CONSECUTIVE SEASONS
• Texas Tech senior DeAndre Washington broke the 1,000 yard mark on his first carry of the second half as the senior finished with 102 rushing yards on 21 attempts. Washington is the first Red Raider to rush for 1,000 yards in back-to-back seasons since former Doak Walker winner Byron Hanspard in 1995 and 1996.
• Washington's 102 yards marked the fourth time this season and the eighth time in his career where he has rushed for at least 100 yards in a game.
GRANT SNAPS TEXAS TECH CAREER KICK RETURN YARDS RECORD
• Jakeem Grant broke the Texas Tech career record for kickoff return yards as the senior totaled 131 against West Virginia, giving him 2,001 now for his career. He broke Eric Stephens' (2009-12) previous record of 1,979 yards.
• Grant caught his sixth touchdown of the season and the 23rd of his career off a 10-yard pass from Patrick Mahomes II with 5:05 remaining in the opening quarter. The touchdown moved Grant into a tie with Joel Filani (2003-06) for fifth place in the Texas Tech record book for career touchdown receptions.
NOTING THE RED RAIDERS
• Breiden Fehoko logged his first career sack midway through the second quarter as the true freshman forced a West Virginia field goal on the third-down stop. He added his first career interception with 2:29 remaining in the third quarter, marking the first time a Texas Tech defensive lineman has recorded an interception since Scott Smith against No. 4 Texas on Sept. 18, 2010.
• Justis Nelson intercepted his second pass of the season and third of his career with 10:59 remaining in the third quarter.
• Clayton Hatfield connected on a pair of fields goals as he drilled a 34-yard attempt with 8:36 remaining in the third quarter before adding a successful 27-yarder with 14:56 remaining in the second quarter. Hatfield is now 11-for-12 on field goal attempts this season.
• Micah Awe piled up a career high with 14 tackles in today's loss. He previously had 13 tackles versus TCU earlier this season.
• D'Vonta Hinton registered a career high with 12 tackles in today's game. His previous high was nine tackles against Kansas earlier this season.
• Patrick Mahomes II came away with career highs for both rushing attemps (18) and rushing yards (73). He was also 21-of-34 passsing for 196 yards and three touchdowns.
• Jakeem Grant recorded five receptions which brings his total to 239 for his career allowing him to pass Detron Lewis (2007-10) for 4th place on Tech's all-time list. Grant also amassed 139 all-purpose yards which enabled him to move past Ricky Williams (1997-2001) into 5th place with 5,149 yards on Tech's career list.
TEAM NOTES
• Texas Tech has now scored in 229 games dating back to the 1997 season, a streak that ranks 12th nationally and second in the Big 12 Conference.
• Texas Tech has now scored at least 25 points in each of its 10 games this season, the longest streak for the Red Raiders since 2008.
• Texas Tech's 378 yards of total offense marked its 50th-straight game with at least 325 yards of total offense, the longest active streak in the FBS.
• The Texas Tech defense totaled three sacks, its most in a game this season. The Red Raiders also secured two interceptions.
• Texas Tech dropped to 4-1 this season and 6-2 under head coach Kliff Kingsbury when leading the turnover margin.
