Swoopes Named 2016 Basketball Hall Of Fame Nominee

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- On Dec. 21--the 124th Birthday of Basketball--to start a year-long celebration towards 125 years, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame has announced the eligible candidates for the Class of 2016, which includes former Lady Raider Sheryl Swoopes.Three distinct modifications have been made to the election process for the upcoming class. Most notably, potential honorees are now eligible on the ballot for Hall of Fame enshrinement after four full seasons of retirement.
This will be Swoopes' first time on the ballot.
Swoopes was the consensus national player of the year in 1993, the Lady Raiders' national championship season. She averaged 28.1 points per game that year, which ranked second nationally. As a Lady Raider, Swoopes set 30 different women's basketball records, including four Final Four records, three NCAA tournament records, four NCAA championship game records and eight Texas Tech school records, including the single-game school record for points (53), which still stands. Her No. 22 was retired on Feb. 19, 1994.Swoopes went on to the WNBA, where she was a three-time WNBA MVP, two-time scoring champion, four-time WNBA champion, three-time defensive player of the year and six-time all-star. She also represented the United States numerous times, including the 1996, 2000 and 2004 Olympic Games.
A press conference announcing the Finalists from the North American and Women's committee for the Class of 2016 will be held at NBA All-Star Weekend, which is scheduled for Friday, February 12th in Toronto, Canada. The entire Class of 2016, including those selected by the direct elect committees, will be unveiled on Monday, April 4th at the Men's NCAA Final Four in Houston, Texas.
Enshrinement festivities will take place in Springfield, Mass., the birthplace of basketball, September 8-10, 2016. Tickets for the various Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Class of 2016 Enshrinement events are on sale as of noon eastern time on www.hoophall.com.
