LUBBOCK, Texas -- Texas Tech opened its home season with a 4-0 win over East Tennessee State on Friday at the McLeod Tennis Center.
"I did not like the way we played at the top of the lineup today," said Red Raider head coach Tim Siegel. "But you have to give ETSU credit, they have some real fighters. But we will have to play better on Sunday, if we expect to win."
The Bucs started the day giving the Red Raiders fits in doubles. After the Texas Tech freshmen duo of Alex Sendegeya and Connor Curry picked up an early break and rolled to a 6-3 win over ETSU's Sebastian Yllera and Conner Huertas. But the Bucs answered at No. 2, as Ismael Merino and Robert Herrera outlasted Jolan Cailleau and Francisco Zambon, 7-6 (7-3).
The left the point in the hands of the two squads top tandems. Texas Tech's Felipe Soares and Hugo Dojas battled point-for-point with Rogerio Riberio and David Biosca. After the Red Raiders saw the Bucs take two straight to tie the match 6-6, a tiebreaker ensued. It was point for point on serve until Tech pulled out a 7-6 (12-10) win and secure the point.
#125 Jolan Cailleau made it a quick 2-0 with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Huertas at No. 4. #111 Dojas then battled back from an early deficit to win 6-4, 6-4 over Ribeiro at No. 2.
The Red Raiders won the first set on five of six courts, but it was Sendegeya that clinched the win with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Yllera at No. 3.
Texas Tech (9-2) will now host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (3-1) on Sunday at noon. The Islanders are coached by former Red Raider assistant coach Steve Moore.
