LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech is expecting over 120 men's basketball alumni this weekend, as the Red Raiders host Oklahoma State at 3 p.m. on Saturday at United Supermarkets Arena.
The Red Raider alumni, which will feature nine decades of former players, have agree to play an alumni game following the Texas Tech-Oklahoma State matchup. The Red & Black Alumni Game presented by Geico will tip just minutes after the conclusion of the men's game.
The two alumni teams will be coached by Texas Tech's all-time winningest coach Gerald Myers and National Basketball Hall of Famer Bob Knight. Meyers skippered the Red Raiders from 1971-1991, while Knight walked the sideline from 2001-2008.
Expected to be on hand are former All-American guard Bubba Jennings and his All-SWC backcourt mate Phil Wallace. The duo led Texas Tech to the 1985 Southwest Conference title and a trip to the NCAA Tournament. Also expected to be on hand is from the 1980s is former forward Ricky Guy.
Fast forward a decade and more former Red Raiders expect to be in Lubbock on Saturday, including 1993 SWC Freshman of the Year Koy Smith, 1995 NCAA Dunk Contest winner Lance Hughes and Guy Clayton. The wings were a deadly from beyond the arc and led Texas Tech to a SWC Tournament title in 1993 and the SWC Co-Championship in 1995.
More recently, names like the "Kansas Killer" Darryl Dora, Wally Dunn, Jesus Arenas, Tanner Ogden, Trevor Cook and Michael Prince. Ironically, three former Red Raiders were in that amazing 167-115 win over East Central in 2008 - Cook (20 points), Dunn (16 points) and Prince (12). Arenas is the current head coach at Lubbock High School.
In all, more than 30 of the alumni are expected to participate in the game, while all of the former alums are expected to be available for autographs and photos following the Red & Black Alumni Game.
The Lady Raiders will complete the day, as Texas Tech hosts Oklahoma State as well at 7 p.m. following both the men's game and the Alumni Game.
