The Red Raiders scored six runs against the Lobos on Tuesday afternoon, half of which came from solo home runs. Left fielder Tyler Neslony, infielder and designated hitter Cory Raley, and infielder Ryan Long all homered, the first time Tech has hit three home runs in one game at home since Feb. 26, 2012 against Northern Illinois.
For the fourth time this season, at least half of Texas Tech's runs can be attributed to home runs. Tech hit two home runs against Nevada in an 8-4 loss, with Stephen Smith hitting a solo homer in the first and Quinn Carpenter crushing a two-run homer in the second. Another was in a 6-5 loss to Cal State Fullerton, where Ryan Long nailed a grand slam to right center in the eighth inning. The Red Raiders also accomplished this feat in their 6-0 win against Northern Illinois, as Neslony homered to right field in the first for a solo shot while Gardner homered to right for a two-run shot in the fifth. Tech is 1-3 in these contests.
Sophomore outfielder and Lubbock native Stephen Smith continues his rule of the roost for walks in the Big 12 this season, picking up his 23rd free pass against New Mexico, his 22nd game played this season. He had 14 base-on-balls through 22 games last season, meaning he's currently earned 39.13 percent more walks than he had through the same number of games last spring.
Ryan Long became the first Red Raider since Bonham Hough in 2010 against Gonzaga to hit a pinch-hit home run, knocking a solo shot to deep right field in the eighth inning. Long, as a reserve, has seven RBI this season.
Speaking of pinch hitters, Anthony Lyons is batting .500 (3-for-6) this season when pinch hitting, and is now a .400 career pinch hitter.
While Corey Taylor has been lights-out as a reliever so far for the Red Raiders, posting a 0.00 ERA, junior righty Matt Custred has been sneaky good, also posting a 0.00 ERA through six appearances, and like Taylor are the only Tech pitchers with five straight scoreless outings in 2015. Custred, on the season, is 0-0 with six innings pitched allowing just three hits with seven strikeouts and four walks.
