Tech Clinches Series on 12th-Inning Walkoff Homer

Garcia's first career home run came in walk-off fashion in the 12th inning off the left-field foul pole to lead Tech to the series-clinching win.

LUBBOCK, Texas - Freshman shortstop Orlando Garcia hit his first career home run off the left-field foul pole in the bottom of the 12th inning to give No. 23 Texas Tech a 3-2 victory over Baylor while clinching the Big 12 series on Saturday afternoon in front of a near-capacity crowd of 4,387 fans at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.
The Red Raiders (21-14, 6-5 Big 12) received six strong innings from starting pitcher Cameron Smith before 5.1 scoreless innings from senior reliever Corey Taylor while the Tech pitching staff held Baylor scoreless for 11 consecutive innings.
Baylor dropped to 13-21 overall and to 4-7 in Big 12 play this season.
Both teams combined stranded 25 base runners as neither team scored from the third to 11th inning.
With one out in the bottom of the 12th, Baylor relief pitcher Troy Montemayor struck out defensive replacement Tim Proudfoot to start the inning. Garcia followed and hit a 2-1 pitch down the left-field line and off the foul pole to win the game in extra-innings.
It marked Tech's first walk-off home run since 2008 and the program's first walk-off homer in extra-innings since 2002.
Tech senior right-handed pitcher Dominic Moreno entered in the top of the 12th with a runner at second base and followed with back-to-back strikeouts to hold Baylor from scoring for the 11th consecutive inning.
Moreno (2-3) earned the win during his 14th appearance of the season while notching his team-leading 46th and 47th strikeouts.
Montemayor (0-3) took the loss throwing 3.1 innings with three strikeouts and two walks.
Baylor grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first inning with a pair of walks and two base hits off Tech starter Cameron Smith.
The Red Raiders tied the game with a two-run homer from junior designated hitter Quinn Carpenter in the second inning. It was Carpenter's third home run of his first season with the Red Raiders.
Baylor starter Drew Tolson took a no decision going 5.2 innings allowing two runs on seven hits with three walks allowed.
Tech and Baylor will conclude their Big 12 series on Sunday, April 12 with first pitch set for 2:07 p.m. at Rip Griffin Park. Tech sophomore left-handed pitcher Dylan Dusek will make his fifth start of the season against the Bears. The game will be televised on FOX Sports Southwest Plus.
